Keratoconus Exams

Keratoconus is a medical condition that affects the cornea. The cornea becomes thinned and steepened, resulting in distorted vision, sensitivity to light, and decreased vision. We don’t know why this happens. Symptoms typically start in the teens or early 20’s. The cornea progressively changes shape and distorts vision requiring correction. There are many medical remedies for Keratoconus like specialized hybrid contact lenses, scleral lenses and a new procedure called Corneal Crosslinking. There are two surgical procedures in Corneal Crosslinking that are widely used in the United States and abroad.

Digital Retinal Photography and Optical Coherence Tomography or OCT

Digital retinal photography allows us to take pictures of the back of your eye so that we can look closely at any defects, diseases or medical conditions that affect the eye. We can use these photographs to not only detect new disease but also diagnose Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy or Hypertensive Retinopathy, high cholesterol and even brain tumors.

Optical Coherence Tomography or OCT for short is a highly advanced technological instrument that will allow for the analysis of the retina and the optic nerve at the cellular level. It allows the reviewer to detect everything from leaky blood vessels to a retinal hole or tear. The Topcon Maestro instrument does both of these vital tests that allow us to truly do a state of the art hi-tech eye exam. The OCT will also image the front part of they like the Iris and the Cornea. This can detect early Keratoconus as well as provide corneal thickness to aid in any Laser Vision Correction procedures.
